Are Subway's In-Store Sliced Meat Sandwiches Really Better?

Subway is a chain that's been struggling for some time. In its effort to stay relevant, not to mention afloat, the chain has introduced sandwich meat sliced in the store while you wait. Is it better than the packaged slices previously used?

We asked an expert butcher:

* Freshness: Meat sliced in store is typically cut from a larger piece of meat just before you buy it, so it is fresher than pre-sliced meats. This means that it will have a better flavor and texture.

* Less processing: Meat sliced in store is typically less processed than pre-sliced meats. This is because it does not need to be packaged and shipped, which means that it does not need to contain as many preservatives and additives.

Our personal take? We tried the roast beef at the Tuscaloosa Street location and couldn't tell a difference.

Now if only the franchises would be required to keep two employees on duty at all times.

Subway Coupons Useful for Window Cleaning

In 2022, Subway Sandwich Shops closed 571 locations in the U.S. Corporate offices cited stale menus, passe' decor, and financial losses on special offers/coupons as reasons for the decline of the sandwich shop.

At least once a month, Shoals residents receive a two-sided page of coupons from the popular sandwich chain. Have you tried to use your coupons in the past few months? If you have, you know that most Subway locations no longer honor them.

According to local Subway managers, no locations in Lauderdale County will accept the coupons; one or two stores in Colbert and Franklin will take them. Somehow the allure of a $12.00 sub doesn't match that of a sandwich priced at $6.00.

Two suggestions:

1. Try the Shell Quick Mart deli.

2. Save the Subway coupons for your window cleaning. They work great.

Most Ubiquitous Fast Food? Subway!

A recent survey ranked the most common fast food outlets in the state of Alabama. In case you think McDonald's has the most, think again. Mickey D's and Jack's are roughly tied for second place.

Subway sandwich shops have the most outlets in this state. How about locally? We checked, and Florence has four. While that may sound good, two are practically across the street from one another on Cloverdale Road. The third is downtown on Court Street, while number four is on Mall Road.

With the exception of Bunyon's, West Florence has no fast food to speak of; while Seven Points and nearby neighborhoods have several to choose from, there's not a Subway handy.

What would you like to see come to Florence or across the river? We'll publish a list along with contact information. We can't promise it will bring your favorite fast food eatery here, but it never hurts to try.

New Menu/Prices at Subway

Say goodbye to the five dollar foot-longs at Subway. The cheapest 12” sandwich on their menu is now 5.50; most are 6.00.

Subway has also discontinued some menu items along with a few toppings, so call before you visit if you have a craving for only one menu item.

Customer service? It varies from store to store, but it’s not unusual to have to answer the same question four or five times. A little training goes a long way, but it seems to be absent at most Subway locations in the Shoals..
