Chat-N-Chew: Go for the Sign, Stay for the Food

Just north of the Florence city limits on Cloverdale Road sits a dining institution. The Chat-N-Chew Drive-In has been feeding hungry Petersville and Florence folks since June 8, 1962.The setting is casual, and the food tasty. You won't find steak or lobster on the menu, but you will find the best in fast food if you crave burgers and fries.

Jo and Guy Shook started the eatery in 1962. Sometime in 1966 they added their iconic sign. The original lasted until 2001 when rust and wear had taken their toll. Current owner Shannon Shook had the wisdom to realize the sentimental value of the neon sign and had an exact duplicate made--this one more sturdy and designed to withstand the elements that damaged the original. All in all, the sign(s) has been a fixture in Petersville for 48 years.

Today, Shannon (son of the original owners) provides a small dining room, as well as picnic tables. The menu offers approximately 15 entrees, several side items, and of course the best ice cream and confections found in Lauderdale County.

Chat-N-Chew is closed on Monday and Tuesday; Wednesday through Saturday the hours are 10:00 a.m to 7:00 p.m.; Sunday hours are 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

My main dilemma was just what to order. I settled for a burger and fries to start with and plan to go back to sample most of their sandwich menu. My food was cooked as I waited (so expect a few minutes for your order) and was delicious.

Final verdict? Don't expect linen napkins or lobster on the menu. You can expect some great Southern fast food fare.
